Yes, this can be very good thing. AlgorithmX2, you could do this as range upgrade for annihilation plane ;)

Honestly it just sounds like you want the Vacuum hopper from OpenBlocks, filtering seems silly for a magnetized hopper, and random attraction of items in my book is silly.

Filtering for the annihilation plane has already been suggested, and rejects because of limits of the engine, and I don't really think adding a vacuum adds much value you can't simply design instead. Closing.
