Would it be possible to assign a crafting recipe that has materials on hand priority over a recipe that is missing materials? For instance. I want to craft 100 iron dust. I have 2 ways to achieve this. I can either go up the full chain of IC2 machines to get to Iron Dust or I can use the 2500 'Tiny Pile of Iron Dust' on hand to craft the 3x3 shapeless recipe to produce Iron Dust. I'd like for the 'tiny pile' recipe to get priority in that case. Does that make sense? Thanks again!

I'm pretty sure Algo said something about this way back with AE1, he said it was impossible with AE1 and will most likely be in AE2 in one way or another. On a side note, I haven't yet played a lot with the auto-crafting in rv-1 so it might already be in place just not the most obvious thing in the world.

At the moment it considers higher priority patterns to be prefered, even if it means crafting things, this is generally because you might have cheaper recipe or recipe that involves using more common materials, but you might have a secondary recipe that its higher priced and only used in cases where you cannot preform the first. In other words, it kinda depends on the recipe, and what your doing, I'm having a harder time trying to come up with cases that match your request then cases where I would prefer it do some extra crafting, to prevent using higher value items.

I see what he means and it's that the preferred recipe be used if the ingredients are on hand, but an alternative recipe be used (including whatever further requests) in case these materials are not available, instead of the crafting halting and reporting that it is waiting for the, say, tiny piles of dust. A workaround for these scenarios right now would be to always compact all of your tiny dusts, etc, and not store them in the original form (plus this saves space)

I don't understand your argument, if your default recipe uses tiny piles of dust ( these are not craftable, they are just bi-products. ) then if you run out it will automatically use the second priority recipe would would grind ores, or whatever it is ment to be. Your comment makes it sound like AE2 does not' support pattern priority at all.
